Hi, my name is Annika and I work and live at La Haya Stables. I have been working here since the beginning of June and I don't know when I will leave this wonderful place, but hopefully not soon.
How I came up with the idea of working as a groom I'm not really sure of, but I was tired of school and began looking for this kind of job and found the website yardandgroom.com where I found La Haya stables and fell in love with the place at once. I decided to finish school and the see if they still wanted someone (two years later), but yeah, apparently they did, so now I'm here :D
My regular duties on the yard is normal stabels/groom duties, like feeding, taking horses in and out from the fields, mocking out, sweeping the stables/yard etc. I also ride two horses at the moment, Ciluca La Haya (7y old mare) and Merudin (20y old gelding) and I also ride Laudon (21y old gelding) when I work alone, like I did whole August and October.
This type of job reliquaries someone who is passionate about horses, likes irregular working hours and don't mind being outside no matter the weather. What I find hardest with this job is the late nights you get when there is an afternoon/night competition in the winter and you come home really cold at eleven a clock in the evening and still have work to do in the stables, but on the other hand, there are so many more things that I love with working like this than what I don't like about it. I get to be outside so many hours every day, I get to be with so many wonderful horses, I get to see many different stables when Olga competes and I get the chance of growing as a rider, riding gran prix educated Merudin and Laudon for Olga who educated these horses herself. And of course, I got to meet the beautiful Janica :)
Living in another country bring of course some difficulties and differences from what you're used to from you native country. What I had hardest time to adopting to was actually the children here. My "new parents" have two boys, and I am absolutely not used to that! But I slowly learned how to handle smaller people, even if it takes time. When it comes to the stable work there was not really anything I had a problem with, or have a problem with, more than I had never been mocking out with straw before, but it took me a week or two and then I had got a hang of it.
Life in general is doing good here. As I said before I've been working as the only groom here for nine weeks in total, but as the loner I am, I just enjoyed being the only human being in the stables. I have no desire to go home, I do miss my family and friends, but I hardly feel like I want to move back home right now. I just love what I'm doing and I want to keep doing it forever. The people I miss I skype with, write with on facebook etc, so we're doing fine. Some day I might begin studying something other that interests me, but for now I am absolutely happy with me life as it is.
I think that that's enough about me and my life here, but btw, the picture of me when I decided to move in to our pellets box the other day which might say something about who I am!
